Ranovola Water Program to Reach 350,000 People Across Three Regions by 2030

Zurich, Switzerland, and Boulder, CO – Helvetas, a leading international development organization, and Virridy, a global leader in water-resiliency carbon credit generation, have partnered to implement the Ranovola Water Program for Madagascar, an ambitious initiative to expand safe drinking water services to hundreds of thousands of people while leveraging carbon finance to sustain long-term operations.

The program builds upon an existing initiative that provides safe drinking water to nearly 100,000 daily users, and will scale to reach approximately 350,000 people across the Diana, Menabe, and Amoron'i Mania regions by 2030.

Carbon Finance for Sustainable Water Access

A key component of the Ranovola Water Program is the use of carbon finance to support ongoing operations and expansion. The program will generate verified carbon credits under Gold Standard's "Methodology for Emission Reductions from Safe Drinking Water Supply v1.0," based on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from households no longer needing to boil water for purification.

Virridy will lead carbon credit generation efforts, leveraging its expertise in digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (DMRV) to quantify emission reductions and market the credits to global buyers. Revenue from carbon credit sales will be reinvested to support capital, operation, and maintenance expenses, ensuring the program's long-term sustainability.

Water Infrastructure

The program will support community water systems that use a combination of gravity-fed and solar-powered pumping technologies. These systems provide reliable safe drinking water to communities across Madagascar's diverse geography, from coastal areas to highland regions.
