Program to Reach 300,000+ People by 2026 Through Solar-Powered Water Systems
Bujumbura, Burundi, and Boulder, CO – Virridy, a global leader in water-resiliency carbon credit generation, is partnering with Amazi Water, a Burundian social enterprise, to sustain and expand clean water access across Burundi through carbon finance.
Amazi Water implements solar-powered water supply systems across both rural and urban communities and is central to Burundi's national plan to achieve universal water access. The program is projected to reach an additional 200,000 people by the end of 2025 and over 300,000 by 2026.
Carbon Finance Model
The partnership will generate carbon credits under Gold Standard's "Methodology for Emission Reductions from Safe Drinking Water Supply," based on the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from households that no longer need to boil water for purification using biomass fuels.
Virridy will support the program through the development, monitoring, and sale of Gold Standard-certified carbon credits. Revenue from credit sales will fund ongoing operations, maintenance, and expansion of water infrastructure, creating a sustainable financing model that does not depend on traditional aid.
Expanding Virridy's East Africa Portfolio
The Burundi program joins Virridy's growing portfolio of carbon-financed water programs in East Africa, including the Amazi Meza school water program in Rwanda and programs in Kenya and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Together, these programs are working toward Virridy's goal of delivering clean water to over four million people by 2030.
